Around The World - 1977

Route Map - Pakistan

It was a huge relief to finally leave the desert and get into tropical Pakistan. Mangos and other fruits everywhere. But, we only spent a few days in Pakistan because everyone was anxious to get up to Kashmir in India

We were in Lahore on July 4th and attended the US Consulate's Independence Day party. This was back when such events were still held on embassy/consulate premises and were open to anyone with a US passport or a friend with a US passport. They served hot dogs and beer. Almost heaven.

On July 5, 1977 General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq staged his "Opration Fair Play" coup against the government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Although it was a bloodless coup, tensions were high. We left Lahore and arrived in India on July 7th.
